The CW’s Arrow is basically Hamlet as a Batman. Which sounds crazy but actually kinda works. Anyway, the fantastic thing about this show is the women, who are all really awesome and do not put up with Ollie’s Hamlet-esque bullshit.
Laurel Lance (who’s first name is Dinah but is NOT Black Canary) is a smart and dedicated lawyer for Legal Aid. She takes on difficult cases against the city’s most powerful and corrupt men, putting herself in physical danger at times because of it. And she even has a Foggy Nelson. Technically Laurel was also Ollie’s girlfriend but that was before he took her sister out for sexytimes on his boat which then sank, killing her and stranding him on an island for 5 years (as happens). I love Laurel because she’s strong enough to be the better person in all her interactions with Ollie, while still getting a few good cracks at him.
Then there’s Ollie little sister Thea (who’s got a bit of a drug problem and is called Speedy, but is NOT Speedy). She could very easily be the token teenager acting out, but she’s not. At 17, Thea drinks too much and is always on the lookout for a party. And naturally Ollie just wants to protect her from all the scary bad things in the world. Speedy is having none of it. She knows she’s a bit of a train wreck but she’ll be damned if her brother’s going to waltz in and judge her. She can absolutely take care of herself.
I spend most of the time Ollie’s on the screen waiting for Laurel or Thea to show up. And I’m OK with that.
